NFPFA Year in Review
2007 was a very impacting year for this association to transcend from an organization trying to find its identity to one that eloquently put itself on the map. When the year first started we were filling the effects of soliciting dads to get involved in helping to make this a viable entity after many years of structuring and building up both our principle and purpose for the National Football Players Fathers Association.
After the first quarter of the year we introduced a new partnership with the Virginia Ballet Theatre and program “Athletes for Kids” with the help and support of its director Mr. Frank Bove. We saw this program break ground in the inner cities of Norfolk Virginia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Chicago, Illinois. This could not have been done without the help and participation of two beautiful and wonderfully gifted professional dancers Mrs. Lydia Roberts Coco, Mr. Duncan Cooper and the NFL Virginia Players like William Fuller Retired NFL player, Aaron Rouse Green Bay Packers, Antoine Bethea Indianapolis Colts, and Jamin Elliot Atlanta Falcons. Philadelphia player Donovan McNabb and Momma McNabb worked with the kids in Philadelphia and last but not least Baltimore Ravens Steve Edwards, Napoleon Harris Kansas City Chiefs, were on hand to dance and talk with the kids in Chicago. Overall the program became an instant success and set the stage for AFK to now become a new non profit entity in 2008.
Our preseason meeting in Washington D.C. was attended by a few dads and potential new dads that accompanied their wives who attended the Mother’s Conference. We introduced our new programs Life’s Audible Family Counseling Program, Father and Son Mentoring Program and the Boys to Men Mentoring Advising Program for high school and college student athletes to those dads in that were in attendance.
During the season the Board of Directors met via teleconference several times to plan the remainder of the year events and action items. For me in particular my football season was full of travel in support of my son and his team. I noticed that something needed to be created to ensure that we are in communication with our dads throughout the year, to be available for support and assistance as we encounter unplanned circumstances and situations. So the concept of getting every dad to participate in providing information and insight led me to creating the concepts of developing mentors and periodicals like a newsletter and the website blogs for all to share in.
Our efforts to host a golf outing were cancelled because of lack of sponsorship participation. As the season came to a close our primary focus was now making the Living Legend Awards a big success in Arizona during the week of the Super Bowl. We were blessed to partner with the Professional Football Players Mothers Association in their luncheon efforts. It was an outstanding event where all of our honorees were in attendance, they included NFL great and Hall of Fame Jim Brown, Max Siegel Executive of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. recently retired Kwamie Lassiter of the Arizona Cardinals and last but not least Tommie Harris of the Chicago Bears.
In this great month of April we are already implementing our plans to build our member base and programs listed on our website. This association is now prepared to make its mark in society even more than ever but we cannot get this done with just a few working dads. We think our efforts have eliminated the excuses or notion of dads coming out and not doing anything but meeting just to meet. If you are a paid member we encourage your participation and if you have not joined us yet, make it a point this year to get involved and help us take the National Football Players Fathers Association to a higher level.
God Bless!
